My Camper

We are a family keen to explore the Australian outback, however we would like to enjoy a more 'luxury' style of camping, what do you suggest?

Check out our awesome Kimberley Kamper Trailer - designed to be towed through the Cape York outback! The Kimberley Kamper is best described as a blend of caravan and tent, and is designed to be your comfortable home at the heart of your Cape York off-road camping adventure.

Can I hire the vehicle for one-way travel?

Due to popular demand, Captain Billy now offers pick up and/or drop off in Bamaga.
PLEASE NOTE that a surcharge of $1,150.00 applies per Bamaga pick up and/or drop off and a minimum of 12 days applies.
One way hires of duration less than 12 days may also incur an additional one way charge.

Along with being able to hire a 4WD, do you have bedding and other camping items available for hire?

Yes we do. Contact us for a list of all the items we have available for hire.

Are the campers waterproof and dustproof?

It’s never possible to guarantee water and dust proofing however the manufacturers of our Campers have used comprehensive design features to stop the ingress of water and dust.

What if we have to pack up in damp conditions?

We supply plastic bed covers which you simply fit over the beds and pack up the Kimberley trailer. This helps to ensure your beds will be nice and dry when you set up at your next destination.

Who should we contact if we get into trouble?

Firstly, contact the Emergency Services if there is any threat to life or limb.

If you intend exploring remote parts of Australia, remember distances are long, areas are sparsely populated and climatic conditions can be extreme. In your planning, consider a full range of recovery gear, spare parts and tools, a generous allowance for water, food, first aid kit and communications. Just ask us and we can assist you to ensure you are well prepared.

What do I need to pack?

As our campers come equipped with an extensive list of inclusions, you just need to pack clothes and food.
You can choose to supply any other camping gear you wish to take, or we can supply everything else from camp chairs, outdoor table, turbo tents and extra bedding, through to BBQ equipment. If we don’t have what you are after, chances are we can get it.

Do the camper trailers take long to set up?

Our Kimberley Kamper Trailers take anywhere between 5 – 20 minutes to set up depending on your familiarity with the procedure. We will provide you with a full training demonstration to teach you how to set up and pack down the camper when you come to collect it.
If stopping for longer than a couple of days, we recommend the awning walls are fitted.

Booking and Payment

Which credit card types do you accept?

We accept Visa or Master Card.

Is it safe to use my credit card online via your Website?

Yes. We treat the security of our guest’s information very seriously. To ensure your security, all credit card transactions are secured by SSL, which encrypts the credit card number so as to make it unavailable to any other party.

What is your cancellation policy?

Any cancellations must be received at least 28 days prior to your hire date. Cancellations must be received in writing (email, letter or fax) and confirmation from us of receipt of your cancellation is proof of your cancellation request. If you do not receive a reply from us advising receipt of your cancellation then you must assume that our offices have not received your cancellation. A cancellation cost up to but not more than the deposit will be incurred.

Driving In Cape York

When is the best time to travel around Cape York?

The best time to visit Cape York is during the 'Dry Season’, which is between May - late September as the 'Wet Season' starts in November.


Is there an age restriction for hiring a 4WD from you?

All Drivers must be over 24 years of age and have a valid drivers licence.

What is the minimum hire period available?

7 days is the minimum 4WD hire period.

How long do you suggest we hire the 4WD to get the most out of our Cape York self-drive experience?

We suggest a minimum of 14 days. The trip to Cape York is approximately 2000km’s return.

Should I organise travel insurance for my self-drive tour?

We strongly suggest that you organise travel insurance to cover loss of costs through cancellation, loss of personal belongings, baggage, money and medical expenses.

Will I be able to get cell phone coverage in the Cape York area?

Telstra Digital mobile telephones only operate in CDMA areas such as Cooktown, Laura, Coen, Weipa, Loyalty Beach and Thursday Island.

Is there anything that will not be covered under insurances on the vehicle?

You have a choice of insurance excess options that we can discuss with you. However damage to tyres, overhead, under-body and water are not covered by insurance and any damage will need to be paid for by the hirer.
